Interact: Fall 2019

By Lauren Olszaniecki

Richview’s Interact Club members teamed up with Etobicoke Collegiate Institute’s Interact division to clean up James Gardens on October 6th, 2019. This was the first of Interact’s many initiatives for the 2019-2020 school year.

The Interact Club is a haven for Richview students who want to make a difference in the community. With Dr. Brożyna as the teacher supervisor, the Interact Club has had many years of well-organized events. It is a great place for students to get involved and earn volunteer hours while having fun with friends. Sponsored by Rotary International, Interact’s motto is “Service Above Self”.

The Interact Club continues to participate in a myriad of events for many Interact and Rotary groups across Ontario, including World Polio Day on October 24th, Days for Girls on November 21st, and Kids Against Hunger in the early spring.

One of the focuses of Interact is World Polio Day— a day of recognition. Although the western world is essentially free of polio, there are other parts of the world where people have limited access to vaccines. To raise money to get these vaccines to the less fortunate, Interact Club sold cupcakes! They sold out quickly, earning a profit of $100. The icing on these cupcakes was purple, because once the vaccination is given, the patient receiving the vaccine has their pinky marked purple to show that they are free from the disease. Richview also contributes to Days for Girls. Days for Girls is an organization that provides menstrual supplies to girls and women in developing countries and has had a measurable and direct impact each year. The reason for the organization’s existence is that many of these girls would miss school during their periods. This provision of menstrual products prioritizes girls and their education. Interact planned the event for November 21st, but sadly the event was cancelled. The event will be rescheduled for later in the year. To learn more about these girls and the organization, visit http://www.daysforgirls.org.

Other activities include fall and spring cleanups at public parks and tree planting in the spring to celebrate Earth Day. Remember, many of these activities are outside of school hours, so it’s a great opportunity to get those volunteer hours!
